Debbie Phillips Response

Sunday June 28, 2009

Thank you for writing to share your concern about the impacts of proposed budget cuts on Ohio’s libraries. I agree with you that libraries are important to our communities in many ways, including for small businesses, education, and entertainment. They help to provide internet access and information to many people. I am a long-time patron and supporter of Ohio’s libraries and I worked to protect libraries when the budget was before the House.

However, as you know, the state is facing a very difficult budget situation. Many families are struggling, and the state has fewer resources available to meet greater needs. None of the decisions we’re faced with in this budget are easy ones.

You are not alone in your concern. Many constituents have contacted my office in support of funding Ohio’s public libraries. While budget negotiations are underway in Conference Committee, I will speak out for their importance.

I believe that by working together, we can find solutions to the challenges facing Ohio. These are tough times, and we must do our best to protect important services and programs while balancing the state budget. Please feel free to contact my office if I can be of assistance in the future.

Sincerely,

Debbie Phillips
